Moscow
Until visiting St. Petersburg years later, I assumed that this initial glimpse of Russia was characteristic of the entire country, and that is not the case. Moscow is a city drenched in mystery, beauty and meloncholy. The struggle of its people and completely eroded faith in government can be felt from the minute you arrive. Getting to Russia is not an easy or inexpensive task, but if you have the opportunity to go, take it.
EXPERIENCE
Red Square and the area within walking distance around it are the most critical stop. Red Square houses St. Basil’s, and is right next to the Kremlin, where the nation’s bureaucratic activities are conducted. St. Basil’s is truly an icon of Russia and despite one anyone writes, you will feel compelled to walk through. Personally the condition of the building is slightly disappointing and some of what would be magical about this unique places feels commercialized and like a building in Epcot Center that has been sloppily repainted one too many times. Red Square also is the resting place of Lenin, who can be viewed at certain times of the day. I was surprised to see many young couples taking photos at the Tomb of Lenin as part of their wedding day photo shoot. The Bolshoi Theater is another gorgeous building not to miss. Boat tours are another fun way to see the city, especially by night,
The true interest of Moscow however is simply in the people watching. With a huge disparity of wealth, Moscow is home to many of the world’s richest individuals. Walking the streets radiating from the central square, showcases an array of high end boutiques and designer stores. The hidden treasure of Moscow is in the cities subway system, one of the public relics of yesteryear, that are absolutely stunning. Be slightly careful if traveling alone or walking around at night, as crime and kidnapping is a real concern.
STAY
Moscow is an extremely expensive city. However, I would not skimp on accommodations while here, since the city feels and can be quite unsafe for tourists. We stayed at a hotel within walking distance to Red Square. I would recommend staying central, since traffic is quite bad, and getting around via taxi can be precarious and costly.
EAT
Russia has a cuisine that can be polarizing. Borsch, potatoes, heavy meats caviar and vodka are popular. International cuisine in this part of the world feels somehow particularly exotic do to the unique origin’s represented.
