Siem Reap
Siem Reap is quite possibly my favorite place in the world (so far). Cambodia is a stunning and exotic place in all regards and I dream of going back!
EXPERIENCE
Siem Reap is one of my favorite places I have ever visited. Angkor Wat was the reason for our visit, but I left having enjoyed so much more than that. Angkor Wat is truly incredible. We caught both a sunset and a sunrise here, I would suggest seeing both. Much like Peru, it is amazing how much freedom tourists have to explore these sacred ruins. We took the time to visit the additional ruins of Banteay Srei and Beng Mealea. These are a bit of a hike but look quite different and made for an enjoyable day. This day provides a great experience seeing the Cambodian countryside while en route.
While In Siem we also enjoyed the Night Market full of all the typical local handicrafts and exotic foods. Another favorite memory from Southeast Asia for me was an excursion from Siem Reap to Tonle Sap. This is a fresh and salt water tributary that reverses directions of its waterflow at various times of the year. After an exciting tuk tuk ride to the launch site, we took a stunning boat ride through the regions floating villages. This was an incredible experience, we enjoyed lunch in a stilted kitchen over the water where kids swam and played. Be sure to catch this if you make it to this part of the world!
STAY
While in Siem Reap we were blown away by our accommodations. We stayed at the Golden Temple Hotel. They offered transfers from the airport via tuk-tuk which added to authenticity of our experience right away. This place blew us away with their gracious service, including banana wrapped rice and hot tea upon arrival. Our beds were decorated with flower petals daily and the pool and poolside dining were exceptional. We also enjoyed the hotel restaurant and massages. I would certainly recommend this place for a luxurious experience at a wonderful value.
EAT
Cambodia has been one of the highlights food-wise in all my travels. Inspired by both Thai and Vietnamese flavors we enjoyed lots of bold flavors and curries. In addition, this region was full of tropical fruits, papaya salads, banana chips and sweet poolside cocktails.
